Psoriasis is a common skin condition that can affect people of all ages. Although more common in adults, it can affect children. It is estimated to affect around 2-3% of the population in the UK and Ireland.
Psoriasis causes raised red patches on the skin, often with overlying silvery scales.
Some people only experience mild symptoms on an occasional basis. Others develop a more severe form of the condition that can have a major impact on many aspects of everyday life. Unfortunately, many people underestimate the effect that psoriasis can have and so people living with the condition do not always receive the help and support they need.
There is a common misconception that psoriasis is infectious or contagious. This is not true – psoriasis cannot be passed on to, or caught from, other people.
There is currently no cure for psoriasis but a range of treatments are available to help keep the symptoms under control. No one treatment works for everyone with psoriasis, so it may be necessary to try a number of different approaches before the best option can be found.
